a review: bentonite clay

After seeing bentonite clay being used across the web for many different purposes, I decided to give it a go myself. My niece mentioned to me that it was good for itchy scalp and it that it helps to bring out the curl pattern more, after that, I was definitely sold.

The container states that you can use it for "facials, acne, body wraps, clay baths, foot soaks, chilled for knee packs and for insect bites". It didn't specifically say use it for your hair but I figured if you can use it for all that other stuff then I'm pretty sure it's okay on hair. You mix it with equal parts raw apple cider vinegar and/or water, apply it 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick and allow to sit on face/hair/etc for 15-20 minutes. Make sure to use a non metal bowl and spoon!

I've used it 3 times on my hair and all i can say is LOVE! My hair looks fantastic after each treatment. I've also used it as a facial twice and my skin looked extra clean. *note- skin can be super red after washing it off, this is normal! It will go away within 30 minutes.* Honestly, it hasn't made my itchy scalp go away but it has lessened the frequency of hair washing I do per week. Even if it doesn't cure my itchy scalp at all I'll continue to use it because of how fabulous my hair looks. I purchased it for $7.99 at Vitamin Shoppe, so it's a great value.

It should look like thin mud when it's mixed thoroughly.

This is my hair right after washing it all out and shampooing and conditioning my hair.

These shots are from the same sections of hair, only damp. See how full and supple the curls look?! Imagine what they'll look like when completely dry!

*This was purchased with my own money and these opinions are all my own.*

mini rope twist update

WOOOOO HOOOOO! We have officially hit 5 weeks with A's mini rope twist. She's been wearing them up in a side pony, down, half way pinned back with flower clips and in buns. Today I decided to braid the top into a side fishtail braid after getting some inspiration from Girly and Curly and Goldilocks*N*Me. This is the longest that twist have ever lasted in her hair, the "rope" part really makes the difference!

Such a silly girl. =)

huffleblossoms: a review and more

About a month ago the awesome Rae of Tweeny Hair sent A a beautiful purple and zebra printed "Huffleblossom". What is a Huffleblossom you may ask? Well, it's probably the coolest most durable flower clip we've ever had. It's made from duct tape! And when I say it's durable, it's durable. A rolls on her head constantly and the flower has still held it's shape nicely. Everything about Huffleblossoms are great, from the style, the price, the shipping.

Super cute right?! A gets a ton of compliments every single time she wears it, we definitely need to stock up in other colors! It could also be cute clipped to a shirt, dress, or purse too!

Last week I posted about 2012 being a time for change, remember? I also hinted on our fan page that a huge giveaway would be coming soon. Here is the start of that huge giveaway! There will be a giveaway held for each of my passions and first up we have "hair". I'm giving you awesome folks the chance to win your very own Huffleblossom!! Not one winner, but 3! I'm so excited for one of you to win, I promise you're going to love it!

bedroom before and after

Randomly this morning I decided that I wanted to redo A's room. She's gotten to a stage where she really doesn't respect her stuff and as a result her room looks a mess and things get broken and lost easily. I thought maybe redoing her room with her help might would make her want to take care of it more. I gave myself a budget of $20.. because well, I'm pretty cheap. lol. I'm so embarrassed to show you the before pics. I have a house rule that all room must be clean before you go to bed, so can you imagine her having to clean up a mess similar to this every single night? Not so fun because I usually end up helping to speed the process along.

Before: AHHHHHH!!!

After:

MUCH better right?! I spray painted her bed a color of her choice. We picked out 2 different fabrics and I recovered some of her old pillows and made the hangings for the wall. I bought a twin sized sheet to make a curtain and made a tie back with the patterned fabric. I also made her some tissue paper pom poms for above her bed but you can't really see them that well. Later I'm going to add photos in the centers of the frames beside the kitten poster. Her room feels so much more peaceful and she loves it!

happy valentine's day!

Wishing you all a happy valentine's day! We didn't do any fancy styles for today. I whipped her up a hair clip this morning and she wore it with her hair in a side pony tail. Simple but festive!

he's back!

The last time I did a hair related post on Man it was about the sad, sad day he received his first hair cut. He got a total of maybe 4 haircuts and we've been growing it out ever since. I think his last hair cut was in August/September of last year but I can't be for certain. His little fro is getting a little out of hand lately since he's so active. I really wanted to give him comb coils but I couldn't find a comb all over my house that would work. =( I was just playing around and discovered that it's long enough to braid! A few hours and some crampy fingers later, Man had a full head of lil mini braids! =D

The only smile I could muster out of him. He was feeling pretty bad but it worked out nicely, he just laid around while I braided his hair.

mini rope twist update

A has had in these mini rope twist since the 19th of January for Kandy Land Kurls protective challenge. We've almost made it for an entire month! If i'm bold and brave I MAY try to make them last until the challenge is over in March. I know if that's the case I'll have to redo at least 10 in the very front of her head, for some reason those look the worst. Nonetheless, I'm still happy that they've lasted this long!

the smokey eye

Our first beauty how to is the smokey eye! This version is not as dramatic so it can be worn as a day look if you like.

Gather your products.
I used:
NYC eyeliner in black
Rimmel London eyeshadow in Smokey Noir 001
Maybelline XXL Extensions mascara
Mary Kay eyelash curler
flat make up brush
(not pictured) NARS eye primer

Step 1
Prime your eyes, you want the shadow to stick!

Step 2
Apply your first shadow like so. I decided to go with the darkest color other than black in my pallet.

Step 3
Apply darker shadow like so and line under your lower lashes. Don't worry if the lines look a little too crisp.

Step 4
Apply a light/shimmery shade up to your brow bone and blend in.

Step 5
Apply liner. Rim the inside of your eye and continue the line out to make a wing, line the top.

Step 6
Curl lashes and apply mascara to top and bottom. *tip* If you have a metal eyelash curler like mine, blow on it for a few seconds to warm it up a bit for a better curl.

And that's it! Step back and admire your smokey eye. =) I can do both eyes in about 5 minutes or less.
