a review: Queen Helene

i've seen quite a few reviews of some of the Queen Helene products and i was dying to try them. Baby Big Hair did a review on curl shaping creme and the curl smoothing oil. you can also find another review by Beads Braids & Beyond on the curl shaping creme. i'm posting those so you can see how it reacts in different hair textures and to prove that this stuff really is THAT awesome!

let me just say i first read reviews on it in july and it took me until august to find it in the store. they were sold out every.single.time! that has to be saying something for it right? the pricing is pretty good on it, it's $7.99 for each thing. i took it a lil step further, i bought the shampoo, conditioner, curl shaping creme AND the curl smoothing oil to test out.

1. i LOVE the smell, it's not too over powering but strong enough to smell pleasent
2. it's working for mine, A's, Man's AND my husbands hair.
3. a little goes a long way
4. the price

honestly, there's not much more i can say because the ladies at the links above said everything that i would say and i hate being repetitive. lol what i can add is my husband has the coarsest hair texture out of all 4 of us and he said that his hair feels a lot softer since he's been using it. he applies a little bit of the oil to his hair before he brushes it in the mornings. the oil has been giving all of our hair the right bit of shine without it looking overly greasy. i've used the oil and the creme everyday in the styles i've posted this week.

this is my hair once dry. it was really really soft and it didn't feel crunchy AT ALL which i really hate. check out that shrinkage.. crazy right?

knotted ponys and a length check

i have successfully fixed A's hair every morning before school with it looking cute and neither of us in tears or her late for school. lol. yesterday Goldilocks*N*Me posted this SUPER cute knotted pony tail style and i fell in love instantly! i knew that i was going to do it this morning on A's hair. i think to trick to morning styling is to have something in mind. this style literally took me 5 minutes.. no joke, i had the hubs time me. lol.

please ignore the lil balls of stuff in her hair, i misted it with hair oil before i took the pics and it hadn't soaked in yet. i did some flash on and flash off pics because i couldn't tell which was the easiest to see.

i've noticed some serious growth in her hair and decided to see just how long it has gotten. yep.. i was right on the growth, it's a lil below the waist! and yes, she's only 4. lol

and for reference, these were her twist at the very beginning of august.

i swear, i almost can't believe the growth myself! it just goes to show that when you take care of your hair, it really will grow! =)

inspired by 2 and a funny

i had about 20-25 minutes to do A's hair this morning and i knew exactly what i wanted to do. at the beginning of the month i posted a cute style done by Goldilocks*N*Me. last night i saw sidewinders used by Keyative Styles that i really liked too. so what did i do? i combined them both and the outcome was very cute!

*sorry for the poor pics, i took them with my phone because i forgot my camera at home. will get better ones later*

she got A LOT of compliments on this at the dentist office =)

and now for the funny. we went to old navy yesterday after school and A made a new friend. =D
here's a series of conversation:

"awwww, your face is so cute"

"she's my friend mom, i love her"

 "where's her mom and dad?"

"HUH?!?!? SHE'S NOT REAL?!?!"

"are you sure mom?!" LOL

LOL. it was soooo funny. i could barely keep my phone still to take the pics. when we walked away she said "mom, i still like her" lol.

gaga inspired

back in april when A had her mini twist i did the lady gaga inspired bow in her hair and it turned out super cute. i only had maybe 5 minutes to fix her hair this morning so i thought i'd attempt it instead of just a plain bun. it looks a little flat in the pictures but i guess it's because her hair is wet. i'd definitely recommend this for dry hair. but either way, i still think it turned out cute. instead of just wrapping the hair over the center, i braided it then added it over for a little flair. i think it went nicely with her hello kitty shirt. =)

how we do a sock bun

hey yall, just wanted to let yall know that we did a quick video on how we do our sock buns. i know there are different methods but i like the way this one looks the best on her hair.

enjoy! =)

2 different ways to the side AND organization!

A has been wearing a lot of side ponys jazzed up with hair flowers, or bows and headbands. this morning i decided to do a sock bun to the side and she looks sooooooo stinkin cute! especially with her new missoni boots from target.. warning, don't go look at their stuff. i swore i wouldn't do it but i caved and A HAD to have these rainboots.

i'm so excited because i FINALLY have a successful way of storing our hair things without taking up to much space. i bought a jewelry organizer from target for $7 and it worked perfectly. i already had our beads separated by color in ziplock bags that i keep in a baby wipes case. i hung it in her closet and it swivels. i'm in love! =D

i'm probably going to take the headbands off because i don't like it like that. i'll maybe hang them off where the clippies are

meal plan monday: building a pantry

this weeks meal plan monday is going to be about building your pantry along with the meal plan and recipes for the week.

i spent $218 this week on our groceries. did i need to? no, not really, we still had quite a bit of food left from the last shopping trip, but there's a method to my madness. =) i bought stuff that is on sale so "stockpile" our pantry because we had the extra money to spend. not only did i do that but i went ahead and bought stuff for the 2 weeks of meals that i have planned so we don't get burnt out on the previous meals. i like to do this because if it ever comes to where we don't have that much extra cash to buy a full load of groceries, our pantry is well stocked and we'll still be alright.
this was our lot. that's bags on bags. it took me 5 trips to the car to bring this stuff into the house. i'd post the grocery list but it is VERY large. if you are interested though, just let me know! also, there is no convenience foods at all that were bought unless you count cereal!

i first came to this idea when i found the blog The Prudent Homemaker. i was fascinated by how much food they had even with a practically zero weekly food budget unlike most of us. the idea is to load up on things that don't spoil in the pantry and meats for the freezer. her website is loaded with excellent information, so instead of just repeating or copying and pasting i'll just direct you there because it's some very useful stuff. she has recipes, tips, and a whole lot more.

the menu plan for the next 2 weeks is:
oatmeal, eggs & bacon/sausage, cereal

wraps, fruit, yogurt, sandwiches, carrots (in any combo)

- tilapia fried rice
- tomato soup with bacon grilled cheese
- beef and broccoli
- chicken noodle soup
- fish sandwiches and salads/baja fish tacos with mango salsa
- chicken pizzas
- open face steak sandwiches and raw veggies

fruit & yogurt parfaits, fitness fudge, walnut muffins, pumpkin muffins

tilapia fried rice
·        4 pieces tilapia
·        Garlic powder, onion powder, salt and pepper
·        1 cup rice
·        1 cup peas and carrots
·        Sesame oil

-      cook rice according to directions *i highly recommend using day old rice, if not you can cook the rice, put it on a baking sheet and dry it out in the freezer. fresh rice will clump*
-      splash fish with lemon juice and season with garlic powder, onion powder, salt and pepper and sear in a pan until it flakes with a fork
-      put rice, frozen peas and carrots and sesame oil in a large pan and "stir fry" it. after about 5 minutes or so, turn heat down, cover and let the veggies steam for about 5 more minutes or until done.
-      spoon rice mixture on a plate, top with fish, and drizzle on soy sauce until desired

tomato soup with bacon grilled cheese
·        1 tsp garlic powder
·        1 tsp onion powder
·        1 tsp oregano
·        1 tsp basil
·        ½ tsp salt
·        ¼ tsp pepper
·        1 6 oz. can tomato paste
·        4 cups water

-      cook bacon and place aside until ready to assemble grilled cheese.
-      Add all ingredients for soup into a pot, bring to a boil and simmer. (stir well)
-      Make the grilled cheese with provolone and bacon.

Beef and broccoli
·        1 cup rice
·        1 lb steak *cut in strips* (seasoned with garlic, onion, salt and pepper)
·        1 ½ cup frozen or fresh broccoli (thawed)
·        ½ bell pepper
·        1 small onion
·        Sesame oil, soy sauce (chinese sauce of choice optional)

-      Cook rice according to package directions
-      Slice bell pepper and onion and sauté in a small bit of oil, add in steak
-      Add a mix of sesame oil and soy sauce if no other sauce is at hand and broccoli, cover pan and turn heat down to medium and cook for 10-15 min or until tender
-      Serve over rice.

Chicken noodle soup
·        Half pack egg noodles
·        1 lg can of chicken broth OR 2 chicken bouillon cubes & 4 cups water
·        1 cup mixed veggies
·        1 lb chopped chicken

-      Season chicken and cook until no longer pink
-      Add in pot with egg noodles, broth and mixed veggies
-      Bring to a boil and turn heat down to medium high and cook until done.
-      *I like to add oregano, basil, and chopped red pepper to our soup*

Baja fish tacos with mango salsa

*I make this for my husband and I but more fish can be cooked to accommodate more people, no need to up the amount of salsa, it makes plenty*
·        2 large ripe mangos, peeled, pitted and chopped
·        ¼ cup minced or finely diced red bell pepper
·        1 tbsp lime juice
·        2 green onions diced
·        1 small jalapeno pepper, stem, seeds and membrane removed

·        3 pieces of tilapia seasoned to liking with chili powder, ground cumin, and garlic powder
·        1 cup shredded red cabbage
·        Monterey jack cheese
·        tortillas

·        ½ cup mayo
·        1 tsp lemon juice
·        Salt, pepper, cumin, chili powder, cayenne pepper

-      Assemble all ingredients for mango salsa
-      Assemble all ingredients for “white sauce”
-      Sear, fry, or grill fish
-      Place fish on top of tortilla and top with white sauce, cheese, and mango salsa

Chicken pizzas
·        tortillas
·        diced onion and bell pepper
·        honey bbq sauce
·        sharp cheddar or pizza blend cheese
·        1 lb diced chicken

-      Cook chicken until no longer pink
-      Assemble pizza and bake until cheese is melted

Open face steak sandwiches

i also wanted to add that we are no longer buying bread from the store. i decided to start making our bread and it turned out GREAT. probably the best bread i've ever eaten. you can freeze homemade bread just like you can freeze store bought bread! i used this recipe to make this bread:

i used a mixer but you can also make this bread by hand.

a review: from Charlotte's Avenue

as you all know (or hopefully know) in my spare time i like to make headers and buttons for blogs. the sweet and awesome Charlotte from Charlotte's Avenue needed help with some html codes for her blog and in exchange she sent me this awesome earring/necklace combo thingy.

first and foremost the quality of it is superb, it is very well made! it is a little heavy in my first holes in my ears but i'm guessing it's because i've had my ears pierced since i was 3 weeks old. i put it in the 2nd hole and i was good to go. they're really fun and are perfect for a special date night with the hubs. =)

be sure to check out her blog, she has great post on homeschooling, cute styles she does on her 3 girls and some adorable refashions for her sweet baby girl Choca!
