meal plan monday

I’ve decided to do a new feature on the blog called “Meal Plan Mondays”. I know this is a hair blog, but I really think this feature can be helpful to mom’s and non-moms alike. So with that, here’s our first feature of Meal Plan Monday!

I typically spend $80-120 for food every 2 weeks for my family of 4. Anytime I spend $120 is a splurge and that happens pretty rarely. I love to coupon but sometimes it’s not worth it to spend $1.50 per newspaper on Sunday and it not have many coupons in it and not all stores will take internet coupons. So, more times than not, I’m coupon free. Meal planning and shopping sale items is my number 1 way of keeping the cost down. For this week we have the following as dinner meals for the following next 2 weeks:

·         Spaghetti and peas and carrots
·         Steak fajitas with slaw and corn
·         Baked chicken, rice and roasted broccoli
·         Mini meatloaves, mashed potatoes, and mixed veggies
·         Oven fried nuggets, fries, and mixed veggies
·         Grilled bbq chicken quesadillas and corn on the cob
·         Steak, rice and roasted broccoli

Each day we’ll pick a meal out of the list for 2 weeks.

Our grocery list looked like this:

·         Steak x2 (I buy breakfast steak, beat it w/ a meat tenderizer and cut it into strips) (5.00 each 3 steak pk)
·         Ground chuck (3.99 lb Quality Foods)
·         Bag slaw (1.79 @ Bi-Lo)
·         Corn and corn on the cob (.98/1.98 great value)
·         Chicken x2 (I typically buy strips and cut it into chunks) (1.99 lb Quality Foods)
·         Broccoli (2.79 2lb bag Quality Foods)
·         Sweet potatoes (.69 lb @ Quality Foods)
·         Potatoes (3.99 5lb bag @ Bi-Lo)
·         Bbq sauce x2 (.99 Bi-Lo brand)
·         Tuna x12(.60 chunk light/1.08 solid white great value)
·         Crackers (1.78 great value)
·         Sandwich meat (4.89 1lb Oscar Myer @ Bi-Lo)
·         Chips (B1G1 @ Bi-Lo 4.29)
·         Grapes (1.29 lb @ Bi-Lo)
·         Fruit snacks (1.79 Bi-Lo brand Curious George)
·         Spaghetti-os x2 (.99 @ Bi-Lo)
·         Chicken bouillon cubes (.75 *Hispanic section* @ Wal-Mart)
·          Garlic powder x2 (.70 @ Wal-Mart)
·         Eggs (3.89 18 count great value)
·         Bacon x2  (3.69 Smithfield @ Wal-Mart)
·         Milk (2.79 almond breeze @ Wal-Mart)
·         Cereal x3(1.00 a box Bi-Lo brand)
·         Peppers x3/onions (.89/1.99 a bag)
·         Ketchup (1.50 great value)
·         Brown sugar (1.44 great value)
·         Sliced cheese (2.99 kraft @ Wal-Mart)
·         Bread x4 (1.00 loaf great value)
·       Grand Total : 106.63
*we don’t have to buy ketchup, brown sugar, chicken bouillon or onions the next trip*

Now yes, I did shop at 3 different stores, but i have to pass all 3 of these stores to get home so it's still cost effective. You can still get these same savings by knowing your stores. Also, Wal-Mart will price match if you have the ad to show them.

Once again, let me state, this is the entire family’s food for 2 entire weeks *most times we have enough to last 2 ½ weeks* and this is how we do it:

-Breakfast is bacon & eggs, bacon, egg & cheese sandwiches, bacon & cheese sandwiches, or cereal & milk
-Lunch is tuna & crackers for dad, tuna sandwiches for me, meat sandwiches for all, A takes either grapes or gummy snacks with chips and water in her lunchbox *me and dad alternate our tuna every other day to save on the cost*
For dinner I generally use 1lb of ground chuck, 6-7 chicken tenders, or 10 oz of steak, it doesn’t seem like a lot, but when paired with other food items it make for a filling dinner for the whole fam. Trust me, we don’t starve!

Now, onto the recipes!

·         Spaghetti with peas & carrots (I already had noodles, meat sauce, and the veggies at home)
o   Cook 1lb ground chuck seasoned to taste with garlic powder, basil, oregano, and rosemary.
o   Add in diced peppers & onions
o   Add to boiled noodles
o   Steam peas & carrots
§  Dinner is served in less than 15 minutes!

·         Steak fajitas w/slaw, corn & rice (I already had salsa, tortillas and rice at home)
o   Cook 10 oz steak with peppers & onions  in cumin, chili powder, garlic powder and red pepper flakes to taste
o   Cook 1 cup of rice with 1 chicken bouillon cube, when done add a little salsa
o   Steam corn and warm tortillas
o   Top your steak fajitas with salsa and a little slaw with corn and rice on the side
§  Dinner is served in 20 minutes!

·         Baked chicken, rice and roasted broccoli (I already had coconut oil)
o   Place around 6 tenders seasoned with salt, pepper, and bbq sauce in oven at 375 for 25 minutes or until done
o   Cook 1 ½ cups rice in 1 chicken bouillon cube and serve with butter
o   Unthaw broccoli in a bowl sitting in cold water. *I eye how much broccoli I need and melt enough coconut oil to cover them completely* After tossing with coconut oil, season with salt & pepper and roast in oven at 400 for 30 minutes
§  Dinner is served in 30 minutes!

·         Mini meatloaves , mashed potatoes, and mixed veggies
o   Preheat oven to 400 and grease muffin tin
o   Place 1 lb ground chuck, 1 piece of bread (toasted and ground into bread crumbs), 1 egg, salt, pepper, garlic and onion powder to taste in a large bowl and mix thoroughly
o   Roll enough of the mixture to make a large meatball to fin into each hole of the muffin tin
o   Mix a few tablespoons of brown sugar and ketchup to make a sauce and cover the tops of each and bake for 30 to 40 minutes or until no longer pink in the center
o   Boil potatoes and mash with a little milk, garlic powder, butter and cheese if desired
o   Steam veggies with salt and pepper
§  Dinner is served in about 40 minutes!

·         Oven fried nuggets, fries, and mixed veggies (I already had flour at home)
o   Season chicken pieces with salt, pepper, and a little garlic and onion powder and dip into a bowl of milk, then into a bowl of flour. Place nuggets on a greased or foil line baking sheet and bake at 425 for 25 minutes or until no longer pink
o   Chop potatoes in matchsticks and toss with coconut oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper, bake for 25 minutes or so while chicken is baking
o   Steam veggies with salt and pepper
§  Dinner is served in about 30 minutes!

·         Grilled bbq chicken quesadillas and corn on the cob (I already had sharp cheese & tortillas)
o   Season chicken chunks with cumin, chili powder, garlic powder, onion powder and salt and pepper, and bbq sauce and grill on George Foreman until done
o   Put enough chicken and cheese on top of a tortilla to cover and add another tortilla on top and heat until cheese is melted (slice into quarters, make enough until chicken is gone)
o   Steam corn on the cob with salt and pepper
o   Serve corn with butter and quesadillas with salsa
§  Dinner is served in about 20 minutes!

·         Steak, rice, and roasted broccoli
o   Put about a tablespoon of coconut oil into a pan and sauté 10 oz steak until outside is browned. While it’s cooking add whatever seasonings for taste. Add bbq sauce to cover and about ¼ cup of water  and simmer for about 10-15 minutes until meat is done and sauce is thickened
o   Cook rice and serve with butter
o   Unthaw broccoli in a bowl sitting in cold water. *I eye how much broccoli I need and melt enough coconut oil to cover them completely* After tossing with coconut oil, season with salt & pepper and roast in oven at 400 for 30 minutes
o   Serve the steak over the buttered rice with broccoli on the side
§  Dinner is served in about 30 minutes!

and last but not least, a picture of my dinner last night to show you that i had plenty to eat. dad had more chicken and a lil more rice on his plate, each kid had about a serving spoon of each as well

facebook spotlight!

i was browsing through my news feed on facebook and i saw a super cute style by Alicia Reed done on her sweet faced lil girl and i wanted to share it with yall.

kandyland: COPIED =)

this week we decided to do a copy of one of my good friend's styles, the twisted mohawk. just like the last "copycat" style we did, i absolutely love it! i asked Dad what he thought and he liked it a lot, after hearing her dad say that A ran to the bathroom to check herself out. she came twisting out of the bathroom and stated "yep, i look beautiful!" =) just as last time i braided her freshly washed wet hair with coconut oil and eco styler gel. by the time i got to her twist her hair was mostly dry. i didn't get a good picture but the front hanging braid/twist has a zig zag part for some variety.

this picture is just too sweet =)

update on copycat style!

A has had this style in since sunday night and i thought i'd give yall an update on it. i decided i would start braiding her hair a little differently than i normally would. i braided her hair right after i washed it so it was still pretty wet. i detangled each section and applied some coconut oil then eco styler gel then braided it. we typically have a lot of fly aways even when she wears a head scarf at night. another thing we changed up is i bought her a do rag and i think that is the trick! her hair still looks great! and might i add, she lays on a towel at quiet time at school and we all know what a towel can do to braided hair. this has worked fantastic for us so i hope it can be of help to yall too!

*sorry for the flipped pictures, i'm trying to figure it out!*

copy cat style

yesterday as i was browsing BBB's fb fan page i came across a style that i thought would be super cute on miss sassy pants so i set to work. i washed her hair, took our her previous style so the detangling would be super easy and quick. i did something a little different this time. i left some aussie moist conditioner in as usual but then i put a mix of olive and coconut oil on each section before i braided it then i added the eco styler gel. her hair was really soft, shiny and easy to braid even though it was still really wet. she almost had no flyaways at all!

the only difference is i decided to do braids instead of twist like the original had since she had twist last week. i love it and so does she. and that's not just the flash, her hair really did look that shiny!

back to school style

hrm, i have no idea why i'm calling this "back to school" since this is her first time ever being at school. oh well. lol today was a rough day for me. i was fine this morning while getting her ready and i was fine while we took pictures. but then.. in the car as daddy said a prayer i broke down into tears. i didn't want to upset her so i just told her my nose was running =). then i cried at the stop light before the school and i cried as we pulled into the parking lot up until we reached her classroom. i wasn't like movie performance snot crying, but the tears were flowing! lol

it's so bittersweet. i'm happy for her to be able to experience school yet i'm sad to be sending her off. i've been with her since birth, so it was really hard on me. thankfully dad was there to support me in letting go. =D but then as we got in the car to leave her stinkin brother kept askin where his sister was! grrrr for making things harder for me!

she only has half day the first three days but i'm excited to hear all her tales when she gets out.

ok.. don't judge me, cause i did take a picture of the lunch i packed her =x a turkey sandwich, sour cream & onion chips, grapes and a caprisun water =D

 swingin her hair =)

product review: sidewinders

a few weeks ago we received 3 different colors of sidewinders to test out. let me just say, i LOVE them. i decided to use them for A's back to school style. i wanted it to be fun but i didn't have a lot of time to sit and put a million beads on. i'm glad that i had these because i think they actually make the style look a lot better than the beads would have.

i thought they'd be flimsy-ish, like bendable. (does that make sense?! lol) but they are actually a harder plastic. they are easy to put in the hair, just twist them on there and voila! all done!

we got the white, princess pink, and hot pink since almost all of her clothes are pink or have a lot of pink in them. we most definitely will be purchasing other colors in these because it's a neat alternative for beads. this time i decided to keep them in place by putting a bead on the end of her hair (just like you do when regular beading) because i didn't want her taking them out at school.

there are many different colors you can choose from!

now on to the pictures!

*i was not paid for this review. i was sent this product for review purposes only and the statements above are solely my opinion*

front flat twist with a braid out

we started out this style with her wearing 2 french braids for a day. i braided her hair when it was wet with conditioner. for the braid out i put some coconut oil on my hands and unraveled the braids. because she had a center part and i HATE center parts i decided to flat twist the front to the side so it'd be out of her face. it turned out super cute!
